How Much Do Driving Lessons Cost in Windsor? (2026 Price Guide)

Published on

"How much does it cost to learn to drive?" is one of the first questions every new driver and parent asks, and the answers online are frustratingly vague. So here's a transparent 2026 breakdown of what driving lessons actually cost in Windsor, what you're paying for, the extra fees people forget, and how to keep the total down.

The Short Answer: In Windsor, a full MTO-approved BDE course typically runs $500–$900, and hourly in-car lessons usually fall between $40 and $65 an hour. At Rajput Driving School, our MTO-approved BDE course is $425 and in-car lessons are $45/hour.

What You're Actually Paying For

"Driving lessons" can mean a few different things, and that's why prices look so different from school to school. There are really four buckets:

  • The full BDE course: an MTO-approved program (40 hours total) that combines classroom/online theory with in-car lessons. This is the all-in-one option most new drivers choose.
  • Individual (hourly) in-car lessons: pay-as-you-go time with an instructor, usually billed per hour. Good for licensed drivers who just need a tune-up.
  • Road-test packages & car rental: a lesson plus the use of a school car for the actual road test, for people who don't have a car of their own.
  • Government (DriveTest) fees: the licensing and road-test fees you pay the province, separate from any school.

Comparing schools only works when you compare the same bucket. A "$300 course" that's only theory is not cheaper than a "$425 course" that includes 10 hours of in-car training.

The Extra Costs People Forget

Your driving-school fee isn't the whole picture. Budget for these too:

  • DriveTest licensing fees. When you pass your G1, you pay the province a package fee (around $160) that bundles the knowledge test, your first G2 road test, and a five-year licence.
  • Your G road test and any retests. The final G road test, and any retest if you don't pass, are billed separately by DriveTest. Check drivetest.ca for current amounts.
  • A car for the test. No car of your own? You'll need to rent one (ours is $90), since DriveTest doesn't provide vehicles.

Is a BDE Course Worth the Money?

For most new drivers, the full BDE course pays for itself. Here's the math beyond the sticker price:

  • You test 4 months sooner. An MTO-approved course lets you take your G2 road test after 8 months instead of 12.
  • Insurance discounts. Many insurers offer a discount for completing an approved BDE course. It isn't guaranteed, but for a new driver it can offset a big chunk of the course cost in the first year alone.
  • You actually pass. A structured 40-hour program beats a handful of scattered lessons. Our students enjoy a 98% pass rate.
