How to Book Your Ontario Road Test + What to Bring (2026 Windsor Guide)

Published on

You've put in the practice, now you need to actually get a test date and show up ready. This guide walks you through when you're eligible, the three ways to book your G2 or G road test, what to bring on test day, and the car requirements that quietly cause cancelled tests every week in Windsor.

The Short Version: Book online at DriveTest.ca, by phone, or in person once you're eligible. Bring your licence, glasses/contacts, and a roadworthy, insured, plated car, with no dashcam running and no passengers but the examiner.

When Can You Book?

You can only book once you've met the mandatory waiting period for your level:

  • G2 road test: after holding your G1 for 12 months, or after just 8 months if you complete an MTO-approved BDE course.
  • Full G road test: after holding your G2 for 12 months. Note: a driving course does not shorten this stage, the 8-month head start only applies to the G1 level.
Don't run out the clock: You have 5 years total to finish the whole graduated licensing process (G1 to full G). Miss that window and you have to start over from the G1 knowledge test.

How to Book Your Road Test

There are three ways to book, and all you need is your driver's licence number and a way to pay the fee:

Online

Fastest option, book at DriveTest.ca any time.

By Phone

Call 1-888-570-6110 (or 647-776-0331).

In Person

Book at the counter of any DriveTest Centre.

Your first G2 road test fee is already included in the licensing package you paid when you got your G1. The full G road test, and any retests, are billed separately, so check current amounts at drivetest.ca.

Booking in Windsor: Beating the Wait

Road-test wait times in busy centres can stretch out for months, especially in spring and summer. A few ways to get an earlier date:

  • Check for cancellations often. Slots open up daily when other people reschedule, popping back into the booking system to grab one can save you weeks.
  • Be flexible on location. A nearby centre such as Chatham often has earlier availability than Windsor. We even offer a Chatham road-test package for exactly this reason.
  • Book the moment you're eligible. Don't wait until you "feel ready", reserve the date, then use the lead time to practise.

What to Bring on Test Day

Arrive at least 30 minutes early with all of the following:

Test-Day Checklist
  • Your current driver's licence (your G1 for the G2 test, or your G2 for the G test).
  • Your glasses or contact lenses, if you need them to drive.
  • Payment for any fee owing (the G test, or a retest).
  • A roadworthy vehicle that meets the requirements below.

Car Requirements

The examiner inspects your vehicle before you start. It can be owned, borrowed or rented, but it must be a standard passenger (Class G) vehicle that is safe and legal:

Your Car Must Have
  • Valid plates and insurance.
  • Working brakes, signals, lights, horn, mirrors and seatbelts.
  • A clear windshield and good tires.
  • Doors that open from both inside and out.
  • For the G test: the ability to safely reach highway speeds (the G test includes expressway driving).
Instant Rejections
  • A dashboard warning light on (check engine, airbag, brake, etc.).
  • Expired plates or no proof of insurance.
  • A cracked windshield in the driver's line of sight.
  • Bald tires, broken lights, or a non-working horn.

No car of your own? You can rent ours for $90, it's road-test ready and you'll already be familiar with it from your lessons.

What Gets Your Test Cancelled (the "Out-of-Order" Rule)

If your vehicle fails inspection, or something else makes the test impossible, the examiner declares the test "out-of-order", and here's the part that stings: you can forfeit your road test fee and have to rebook and pay again. The exact charge is set by DriveTest and can change, so check the current cancellation and fee policy at drivetest.ca. Avoid it by knowing the common triggers:

  • An unsafe or unfit vehicle, including any dashboard warning light.
  • Recording devices. Dashcams, phone cameras and action cameras are not permitted and must be turned off or disabled. If a built-in camera can't be disabled, you must confirm to the examiner that it isn't recording the cabin, or the test is cancelled.
  • Extra passengers or pets. No one but you and the examiner can be in the car during the test.
Modern-car tip: backup cameras and driver-assist (ADAS) features are allowed, but don't rely on them, and make sure any recording function is off. We break this down in our guide on backup cameras & ADAS on the DriveTest.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers about booking and taking your road test

After holding your G1 for 12 months, or after just 8 months if you complete an MTO-approved BDE course.

You must hold your G2 for at least 12 months first. A driving course doesn't shorten this stage. Remember you have 5 years total to finish the whole process, or you start over.

Online at DriveTest.ca, by phone at 1-888-570-6110, or in person at any DriveTest Centre. You'll need your driver's licence number and payment for the fee.

Yes. The car can be owned, borrowed or rented, as long as it's a standard passenger vehicle that's plated, insured and in safe working order. For the G test it must also handle highway speeds.

An unfit vehicle, a dashboard warning light, no insurance, an un-disabled dashcam, or a passenger other than the examiner. The test is declared "out-of-order" and you can forfeit your road test fee. Check the current cancellation policy at drivetest.ca.
