Rajput Driving School (Windsor) is MTO-approved and offers an MTO-approved BDE course, G2/G preparation, and mock tests. Need structured lessons or a car for exam day? Book with us or see our courses.

How Ontario’s Graduated Licensing Works

The GLS introduces independence in stages:

  • G1 (Learner’s Permit): Written knowledge exam on rules and signs.
  • G2 (First Road Test): Solo driving with conditions.
  • Full G: Highway-ready, fewer restrictions, advanced test.

Stage 1: The G1 Knowledge Test

Written exam at a DriveTest Centre. Covers:

  • Traffic signs
  • Ontario driving laws
  • Safe driving practices

Requirements: Age 16+, vision check, and passing score on the test. Available in multiple languages.

Once You Hold G1

  • Must drive with a fully licensed G driver (4+ years) in the front passenger seat.
  • Maintain 0.00 BAC.
  • No driving between midnight and 5 a.m.
  • No 400-series highways or expressways unless with an instructor.
Tips for Passing
  • Study the MTO Handbook.
  • Practice with timed mock tests to build focus.
  • Read carefully, questions often use tricky wording.

Stage 2: The G2 Road Test

This first road test checks your ability to drive independently on city roads. You’ll be evaluated on smooth starts/stops, observation habits, parking, and basic maneuvers.

Rules with G2

  • Hold G1 for 12 months (8 with an approved BDE course).
  • 0.00 BAC if under 21.
  • Seatbelts required for all passengers.
Passing Tips
  • Practice driving at night and in bad weather.
  • Get confident with 3-point turns and parking.
  • Use mirrors and blind spots on every maneuver.

Windsor/Chatham note: Examiners often include left turns at busy intersections and school zones, practice these ahead of time. Book a local mock test to prepare.

Stage 3: The Full G Test

The final exam adds highway merges, lane changes at higher speeds, and overall hazard response. You must hold G2 for at least 12 months before attempting.

Tips for Passing
  • Merge decisively to highway speed.
  • Keep lane position steady, no weaving.
  • Show predictable, calm driving at all times.

What If You Don’t Pass?

No worries, you can retest after the wait period (fees apply). At Rajput, we offer a 30-minute post-fail debrief + mock test to fix issues before your next attempt.

Quick Facts and Fees

  • A G1 licence is valid for 5 years; your G2 and full G run from the original G1 issue date.
  • The G2 road test takes about 20 minutes; the full G test runs 30 to 40 minutes.
  • The G1 knowledge test, first G2 road test, and 5-year licence are bundled at $159.75 (2024).
  • Retest fees: G1 rewrite $16, G2 $53.75, G $91.25, licence replacement $35.75.
